NEW JOBS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

We have made it a top priority to attract new jobs and economic growth while retaining high-paying and high-quality jobs, and in the last 3 years, we have seen a lot of success. Due to hard work and a focus on quality job growth, Gwinnett is on the rise again and our unemployment rate has dropped to 4.6%.

District 1 has seen an increase of 1,844 new jobs in the last 2 years and over $140,450,000 in economic investment. This is in addition to an approved $70 million Marriott headquarters hotel at Infinite Energy Center and a $30 million Embassy Suites hotel adjacent to Infinite Energy Center.

Gov. Deal also recently announced that Kaiser Permanente will open a national member call center in District 1 that will lead to $50,000,000 in investment and 800 new jobs.

FUNDING PRIORITIES WHILE KEEPING TAXES LOW

When I took office in 2012, Gwinnett was still suffering from one of the worst recessions in history—revenues were declining and tough decisions to cut spending were made.

Now due to a stronger economy, new growth and fiscally conservative leadership, Gwinnett’s budget situation is improving and we have maintained our ‘AAA’ credit rating—higher than that of the United States.

This year, we made real investments in Gwinnett’s future while balancing the budget without raising taxes.

  • Increased funding for public safety
  • Additional investments in Gwinnett County Courts and the District Attorney’s Office
  • Addressed needs of our growing senior population
  • Made necessary investments in transportation

TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS

Improving our transportation infrastructure and mitigating traffic congestion must remain the county’s top focus if we are to maintain our quality of life and recruit high-paying jobs and investment.

Last year, the county began work on an update to Gwinnett’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan. This is a 20-month process that will chart the course for
transportation projects and priorities for the future. We have also made serious transportation investments in District 1 to improve traffic flow with SPLOST dollars.
These are some of the projects that have either been completed or are in the works:

  • S.R. 20 widening from 2 to 4 lanes from Peachtree Industrial Blvd. to Burnette Trail
  • S.R. 20 widening from 4 to 6 lanes from I-85 to Plunketts Rd.
  • Peachtree Industrial widening from 4 to 6 lanes from McGinnis Ferry to Moore Rd
  • Intersection improvements at Suwanee Dam Rd. and Riverside Rd., Ramey Rd., Whitehead Rd. and West Price Rd.
  • Intersection improvements on Duluth Hwy. at Bunten Rd., Boggs Rd., and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Rd.
  • 4-lane McGinnis Ferry was completed from Satellite Blvd. to Lawrenceville Suwanee Rd.
  • Future interchange improvement at McGinnis Ferry and I-85

KEEPING OUR COMMUNITY SAFE

On the Commission, we have made it a priority to enhance public safety by investing needed resources in our Police and Fire Departments as well as the Sheriff’s Office.

  • Added 30 new police officers
  • Added 9 new firefighters and EMTs
  • Provided funding for body cameras for police officers and sheriff’s deputies
  • Added 12 new sheriff’s deputies
  • Moved forward with a new police precinct and the design of a GA State Patrol Post for Gwinnett
  • Unfroze 25 police positions for additional new hires

Thanks to our efforts, our crime rate is down in the last 3 years including a 4.3% drop in 2015 and Gwinnett remains a safe place to live, work and raise our families.

RESTORING TRUST

In the last 3 years, we have restored the public’s trust through ethics reforms that foster a culture of leadership, integrity and accountability.

  • Restored professionalism and integrity in county government
  • Implemented a new, strong Code of Conduct for the Board of Commissioners
  • Set up an Internal Audit Committee that includes citizen members
  • Increased citizen engagement and accessibility by holding 8 town halls in recent years
